in the middle of the night movie reviews from the girl who took flu medicine to get sleepy but doesn't even yawn part one:
today i started with bridget jones's diary.
(yes, i saw it multiple times but i need something familiar to start the day. the other ones like this are you've got mail, annie hall, when harry met sally, anything else, and etc.)
then after a few hours of flixter movie quiz (which by the way is going to take a lot more time than i guessed)
i watched "lord of the flies", "milk" and "signs".
after being fascinated by the great talent of shayamalan to frighten me
i looked through his imdb page and found out his favourite director was hitchcock.
well needless to say he's inspired from him
but the thing is he very well adapted hitchcock's way of making the audience scared without being gore i am impressed. i loved his other movies even "the happening" was fabulous in my opinion. there is only "unbreakable" left and i'm planning to see it soon.
also the lord of the flies affected me a lot but since i knew the story there weren't any surprises.
i can not say that i'm moved by "milk" though.
even though i'm a fan of biographies and films inspired by true stories
i did not enjoy this movie a lot.
it may be because of my high expectations
but the life of harvey milk and his struggle for the rights of gay people was inspiring itself.
in addition to that
one of the greatest actors of our time sean penn is acting the way he always does.
so a little effort would make it a masterpiece
but it was not.
given the circumstances the director was gus van sant
one expects a lot more than this.
i usually get moved from these kinds of movies and spend the next hour searching the internet reading about the people in the film and looking to their real life photos
but i skipped that this time.
anyway still it is a movie worth watching if you keep your expectations in a reasonable level. the script is good, the acting is good and cinematography is better than fine.
oh and also yesterday i happened to start watching the new romantic comedy of jennifer aniston "love happens" with aaron eckhart. needless to say i love romantic comedies. i watch them without judgement. even when i'm not watching tv i put one of them to listen to when i do something else. they keep me happy. but i'm concerned that the comedy romance genre is losing blood these couple of years, i'm starting to thing if they were meant to belong to the 80's and 90's."love happens" did strengthen my option on this one too. even i could not stand watching it after 40 minutes and closed it.
last year was full of disappointments. "the ugly truth", "sex and the city movie", "he's just not that into you", "ghosts of girlfriend's past"... they were all full of clichés and over acting i even felt sorry for them. i do not even mention films like "my mum's new boyfriend" or "the women".
i've been waiting for "the invention of lying" ever since i saw jennifer garner on letterman and yet it was another disappointment. gervais ricky (you may recognize him from extras and ghost town) is acting and directing this movie that takes place in a lie-free world. a place nobody can say anything but the truth...well to be honest i smiled a lot of times but i was expecting a lot of laughter. everything happens in the most expected way. no surprises... the only surprising thing is the guest appearances of tina fey, philip seymour hoffman and edward norton.
maybe it's me maybe i'm losing my point of view here but i'd like to see another "when harry met sally" that belongs to our generation.
to be clear i'm aware of the new kind of romantic comedies of 2008 like "nick and norah's infinite playlist" or "zack and miri make a porno". seth rogen is doing some fine work and is original by all means. his movies are more comedy with a romantic edge i might say. unfortunately that is not what i'm talking about. anyway still we have woody allen. "whatever works" was what i've been waiting for after all his films filmed in europe. he's back and we will meet a tall dark stranger soon according to imdb. yeay!

ps. oh i don't know why i got so talkative at this time of the night but even though i can write a lot more i'm going to stop and watch a new movie that is promising. "arlen farber" a.k.a "the answer man".
and i know i sound a bit nuts talking like crazy about the romantic comedy movies industry. let this be the only thing that will worry me. amen!
